Georg Engel

In Frankfurt, Engel found work as a painter’s apprentice and earned enough money to be able to purchase a passage across the Atlantic. Having set foot on American soil, he first went to Philadelphia, where he worked in a sugar refinery. After a while, he moved to Chicago, the booming metropolis of the American Midwest, where he opened a toy shop.

In Chicago, Engel met another immigrant by the name of August Spies. The two men soon discovered remarkable parallels in their biographies. Spies had been born near Kassel and gone to high school in the city. When his father, a forest ranger, had died Spies had fallen on hard times and decided to immigrate to the United States. After spending his first year in New York City, Spies moved to Chicago, where he worked as a journalist.

Besides their immigrant background and ties to Kassel, the two men also shared something else a common cause and a common fate. Their cause was the liberation of workers from exploitation and their hope for social injustice and a better society in which all its members could enjoy free, fulfilling lives.
